PUBG Mobile was the highest-grossing mobile game in January 2020 according to Sensor Tower.
The top mobile game by worldwide revenue for January 2020 was PUBG Mobile from Tencent with more than $176.3 million in user spending, which was nearly four times more than the title generated in January 2019. Approximately 52.8 percent of PUBG Mobile’s revenue was from China, where it’s known as Game For Peace, followed by 13.7 percent from the United States and 5.5 percent from Turkey. The full ranking of the top mobile games for January 2020 is above. Mobile game revenue estimates are from Sensor Tower’s Store Intelligence platform.
Honor of Kings from Tencent was the second highest earning mobile game by worldwide revenue for January 2020 with more than $151.3 million in gross revenue, which represented 25 percent year-over-year growth from January 2019. About 94.6 percent of Honor of King’s revenue was from China, followed by 1.9 percent from Thailand. The next top grossing mobile games were Candy Crush Saga from King, followed by AFK Arena from Lilith Games and Clash of Clans from Supercell.
AFK Arena was one of January’s fastest risers, generating $88.3 million following its launch in China last month. That was nearly three times the revenue of its previous best ever month in August 2019, when it accumulated $31.2 million. About 70.8 percent of user spending in January came from China, nearly overtaking lifetime revenue of the game’s current top grossing country to date, the U.S.
Tencent's title generated $176.3 million, four times what it earned in January 2019. In China - where the game is known as Game For Peace - 52.8 per cent of the total revenue was earned.
The second highest-grossing country was the US with 13.7 per cent, followed by Turkey in third with 5.5 per cent of total revenue. In December 2019, PUBG Mobile exceeded $1.5 billion in lifetime revenue.
In fourth, having generated $88.3 million was AFK Arena by Chinese firm Lilith Games - its launch in China last month is likely the cause of increased revenue. Closing out the top 5 is Supercell's Clash of Clans - December 2019 proved to be the game's best-ever month for revenue.
At the bottom of the Top Ten is a second Lilith Games title, Rise of Kingdoms. January 2020 was the game's best month in terms of revenue, generating $63.1 million.
PUBG Mobile and its Chinese mainland version Peacekeeper Elite raked in a combined US$232 million of sales in March, topping the global mobile games chart by revenue as many people turned to online entertainment amid the global health crisis, according to data from app analytics firm Sensor Tower.
The China market contributed to 61 per cent of the revenue, while the US market accounted for 11 per cent, according to Sensor Tower. March was the second consecutive month of record-breaking revenue for PUBG Mobile and Peacekeeper Elite in both the domestic and international markets.
PUBG Mobile’s sales boost coincided with the game’s second anniversary and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which has forced millions around the world to stay at home, according to Sensor Tower. The Chinese version Peacekeeper Elite was released last May as a patriotic version after Tencent finally secured government approval to make money from the title.
Online entertainment and games companies like Tencent, the world’s biggest gaming company by revenue, have been some of the clear beneficiaries of measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Global mobile game downloads shot up 39 per cent in February, with China accounting for a major portion of the boost, earlier data from Sensor Tower showed.
Before the pandemic, PUBG Mobile was already on track to become a huge global hit. It surpassed US$1 billion in revenue last year when combined with Peacekeeper Elite, according to earlier estimates by Sensor Tower. The international version PUBG Mobile was also the most lucrative Chinese mobile game outside China in 2019, pulling in US$776 million.
The battle-royale genre (which sees players competing against each other on large maps to be the last person standing) rose to incredible popularity in 2018. While Fortnite was once the undisputed sales champion of the genre, PUBG Mobile now has much more momentum and is crushing the rival game on smartphone and tablet platforms. Tencent also owns a 40% stake in Epic Games -- the company responsible for Fortnite.
Its more than three-fold March sales increase also partially stems from the title's release timing in China. The game (which exists in a modified format in China and goes by the name Peacekeeper Elite) had to be changed in the country to meet regulatory standards before being rereleased last May. Tencent's battle-royale hit has seen fantastic momentum since relaunching with monetization privileges, and the Chinese market accounted for roughly 61% of the title's sales last month.
Sensor Tower, a mobile application data analysis platform, today released its latest research report, announcing the revenue ranking of Chinese mobile game products in overseas markets during March 2020.
For these two, things didn’t change. Moreover, they improved statistics. The report shows that in March 2020, Tencent’s ‘PUBG Mobile’ and ‘Peace Elite’ global revenue exceeded $232 million, three times the same period last year. So they continue ranking first in the global mobile game bestseller list. Among them, revenue from the Chinese market accounted for 61%, the US market accounted for 11%, and the Japanese market accounted for 3.6%.
Sensor Tower's previous report pointed out that globalization is the main reason why PUBG Mobile continues to set new records after two years.
One of its key rivals, Fortnite from Epic Games, has made $838 million to date from just the App Store, while Knives Out from NetEase has picked up approximately $915 million in lifetime revenue across iOS and Google Play. Another recent Tencent launch, Call of Duty Mobile, has generated $95 million since its global release at the start of October.
